Onimusha: Way of the Sword Ending and Postgame

There is one campaign ending, followed by an after-credits scene. Start with the spoiler-free preparation, then choose final-boss help, current-save cleanup, New Game Plus or Boss Rematch.

Miyamoto Musashi exploring a Malice-twisted shrine

Quick Answer

Onimusha: Way of the Sword has one campaign ending and an additional scene after the credits. Complete The Clash at Rendaino to see it; there is no separate collectible checklist for a true ending. Afterward, Continue returns your cleared save to before the finale, New Game Plus restarts the story with selected progress retained, and Boss Rematch lets you replay encounters separately.

Spoiler-free: how many endings are there?

There is one campaign ending. The after-credits scene is an extra part of that conclusion, not a different outcome selected by an optional quest score. Finish the main story; you do not need to clear a special true-ending route first.

Before accepting The Clash at Rendaino, make a separate manual save and check your healing, equipment enhancements and charm setup. The final mission warns you before free exploration closes for its sequence. Take that opportunity to finish any activities you want to do before the finale.

Final-boss spoilers: Minamoto no Yoshitsune

Minamoto no Yoshitsune is the final opponent. The encounter has three phases, with the last phase requiring Musashi’s Oni Awakening to deal damage. If regular attacks stop reducing his health then, the encounter has changed its rules; it is not asking you to find a different ending item.

Treat the opening phases as preparation for the last one. Defend the sword sequences, avoid the soul-stealing grab and keep useful healing and gauge support available. In the armored phase, use deflections to work on stamina rather than spending long combos into intact armor. The full phase table belongs in Boss Fight Guide with Strategies.

Story spoilers: the ending and the extra scene

Musashi defeats Yoshitsune, and Shizuka’s departure closes her role in his immediate struggle. The closing scenes return to Musashi and Okuni. They leave room for his life beyond this conflict rather than presenting a menu of good, bad and true outcomes.

Let the credits finish. The additional scene shows Musashi and Okuni together again and reveals that he still has the gauntlet. You do not need a separate collectible route to make this scene appear.

Continue, New Game Plus or Boss Rematch?

Keep your earlier manual save separate when starting a new run. If your goal is unfinished side content, choose Continue first; beginning New Game Plus restarts those quests instead of preserving their current completion state.

What carries forward, and what starts again?

The useful distinction is learned progress versus the equipment economy. A retained charm enhancement does not mean your sword enhancement level is retained too. Check the new run’s equipment screen before treating Musashi as fully upgraded.

Before you start another run

  • Use Continue if you still want to finish quests in their current state.
  • Keep a manual save that lets you return to the completed run.
  • Improve retained skills and charms that suit the next run. Equipment upgrades can still help with current-run fights, but their levels reset in NG+.
  • Use remaining Red Souls deliberately; the unspent currency does not carry forward.
  • Check your Boss Rematch completion marks before repeating lower difficulties. Higher-difficulty clears credit the lower ones.
  • Select Carnage only when you want to commit to that campaign. You cannot switch that run back to Story or Action.

Frequently asked questions

How many endings does Onimusha: Way of the Sword have?

One campaign ending, with an additional scene after the credits. There is no separate true-ending route selected by optional completion.

Do I have to complete every side quest before the ending?

No. Side quests and collectibles are separate completion goals. You can finish the campaign and use Continue to return to before the finale for cleanup.

Can I explore after the credits?

Yes. Choose Continue to return your cleared save to before The Clash at Rendaino. Choose New Game Plus only when you want to restart the story.

Is the post-credits scene another ending?

It is an additional scene following the same campaign conclusion. Let the credits finish to see it.

Can I fight Yoshitsune again without replaying the whole story?

Use Boss Rematch in the Practice Ground once his entry is available. The Bosses page explains the entrance and difficulty completion rules.

Do equipment upgrades carry into NG+?

Clothing, sword and gauntlet enhancement levels reset. Learned skills, charm enhancements and pouch enhancements are retained, so check these as separate systems.

When does Carnage unlock?

Complete the campaign once, then choose it for a new run. New Game Plus lets you bring retained progress, but Carnage cannot be lowered after you select it.
