Musashi Moveset, Skills and Combos

Musashi's kit is a focused set rather than a giant combo list: light and heavy katana strings layered with eight officially named techniques, the Issen counter family, four Oni abilities and three summoned Armaments — across two control layouts.

QUICK ANSWER

The short answer

Musashi's kit is built on one-handed (light) and two-handed (heavy) katana strings, layered with eight officially named techniques: Parry, Deflect, Evade (Reflex Dodge), Oni Bow, Environmental Objects, Blade Barrage, Blade Lock and Reflex Combo. The Issen family carries the skill ceiling — Issen is a perfect-timed counter, Break Issen is a stagger finisher that can target boss body parts, and Chain Issen chains instant kills across crowds. Defense feeds offense: parries build the Blazing Gauge toward Blazing State, deflects drain enemy stamina, and Reflex Dodges fill the Reflex Gauge toward a Reflex Combo. Souls route through three colors — yellow heals, red upgrades, blue fills Oni Power for the three Oni Armaments — and two control layouts (Aggressive and Defensive) are offered at new game.

The basics

Light and heavy katana strings

Musashi fights primarily with a single katana, and his moveset is a focused set rather than a giant combo list. One-handed attacks are the light strings — quick but relatively weak slashes — while two-handed attacks are the heavy strings with more reach and power.

Every attack Musashi lands depletes the stamina of his foes. Once an enemy's stamina is depleted you can perform a Break Issen, so the basic loop is: attack to wear down stamina, then convert the break into an execution.

Official techniques

The eight named techniques

Capcom's official action pages name eight techniques that make up the full toolkit beyond basic strings. Together they cover defense, ranged play, environment use and clash contests.

The eight official techniques in Musashi's kit
TechniqueFunction
ParryPerfectly timed block bounces the attack away; enemies can be flung into walls or each other, and parries build the Blazing Gauge
DeflectKnocks the attack off the blade, removing a large chunk of enemy stamina
Evade (Reflex Dodge)Perfectly timed dodge avoids damage entirely and opens follow-ups; chained dodges fill the Reflex Gauge
Oni BowRanged bow with a chargeable shot for more damage
Environmental ObjectsTatami mats as shields, carts kicked into enemies — officially endorsed dirty fighting
Blade BarrageButton-mash clash when blades meet; answering a two-handed clash with one-handed attacks (or the reverse) wins it
Blade LockLocked-blade struggle won by mashing — the winner gains parry and deflect benefits
Reflex ComboPowerful follow-up chain unleashed after Reflex Dodges fill the gauge

The signature

Issen, Break Issen and Chain Issen

The Issen is the Onimusha signature — a perfect-timed counter where the risk and reward live in a single timing window. The Issen counter is your defensive holy grail: miss the window and you are left wide open, land it and you can chain into more.

Break Issen is the stagger finisher: once a foe's stamina is depleted, the execution triggers with a dramatic pause and camera angle, and against bosses it lets you target body parts or strip armor. Chain Issen is the crowd-clearer — press the light attack again as your first Issen lands and the camera locks to the next enemy for a highlighted follow-up kill.

At the extremes the system even lets you Issen projectiles — including, reviewers report, lightning itself.

Beyond the katana

Oni abilities and Oni Armaments

The Oni Gauntlet adds four abilities: Oni Vision reveals what is hidden to human eyes, Oni Strength breaks defenses and barriers, Oni Agility grants wall-running bursts of speed, and Oni Awakening unleashes a full-power form with the Onimusha Onslaught technique.

Three summoned Oni Armaments sit on top, each with a situational read: Two Celestials when you are low and need Yellow Soul sustain, Earth-Shakers against shields, armor and heavy defenses, and Wind-Whipper when surrounded — its vortex also neutralizes incoming projectiles, and near fire it becomes a blaze.

The economy

Soul routing and the Blazing loop

Defeated Genma drop souls in three colors: yellow restores health, red funds permanent upgrades, and blue fills Oni Power for your Armaments. In the full game the loop extends — parries fill the Blazing Gauge, Blazing State boosts damage and blue-soul drops, and releasing Armaments yields purple souls that charge the Oni Awakening gauge.

One modernization matters for the loop: you can absorb souls while moving now, and switching Oni Armaments slows time briefly to ease the pressure — both confirmed by the developers as changes that keep the classic identity intact.

Settings

Aggressive or Defensive: pick your layout

A new game offers two control layouts, and you can swap between them in the options menu at any time. Aggressive keeps combat actions on the face buttons — easy to learn but it clashes with the left-bumper guard habit most players bring from other action games. Defensive puts guard on the left bumper with light and heavy on the face buttons, matching Souls-like muscle memory, which is the layout most guides recommend.

Direct answers

Frequently asked questions

What moves does Musashi have in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

A focused kit: one-handed light and two-handed heavy katana strings, eight named techniques (Parry, Deflect, Evade, Oni Bow, Environmental Objects, Blade Barrage, Blade Lock, Reflex Combo), the Issen counter family, four Oni abilities and three Oni Armaments.

What is the difference between Issen, Break Issen and Chain Issen?

Issen is the perfect-timed counter that punishes a landed read. Break Issen is the execution finisher on a stamina-broken enemy — against bosses it can target body parts or strip armor. Chain Issen chains instant kills from one foe to the next in crowds.

Which control layout should I use?

Most guides recommend Defensive, which puts guard on the left bumper and attacks on the face buttons — closest to Souls-like muscle memory. You can switch between Aggressive and Defensive in options at any time.

How do I unlock Musashi's Oni abilities?

Oni Vision, Oni Strength, Oni Agility and Oni Awakening come from the Oni Gauntlet as the story progresses; Oni Armaments are charged with blue souls via Oni Power and include Two Celestials, Earth-Shakers and Wind-Whipper.

What do the soul colors do?

Yellow souls restore health, red souls fund permanent upgrades, and blue souls charge Oni Power for Oni Armaments. In the full game, releasing Armaments produces purple souls that fill the Oni Awakening gauge.

What is Blazing State?

A powered-up state triggered when parries fill the Blazing Gauge. While active, Musashi's attack damage rises and enemies drop more blue souls, which feeds more Armament use — a self-sustaining loop.
