Quick Answer
Start by identifying why the last attempt failed. Use a timed block to parry, attack just before impact for Issen, and deplete enemy stamina to open Break Issen. Then match your tools to the encounter: the bow can interrupt special targets, healing needs a safe opening, and Yoshitsune’s final phase requires Oni Awakening. The full 18-entry directory is on the Bosses page.

Choose a defense before choosing a punish
A failed counter does not always mean your timing was slow. You may be using the wrong response for the attack. Learn which action solves the move first, then practice its timing.
- Combat Guide: inputs, timing and the soul loop
- Genma Weak Points: choose the target after a stamina break
| Action | Use it for | What follows |
|---|---|---|
| Block | A fallback against blockable attacks when you cannot read the timing. Watch your stamina. | Create room to reset. Holding guard through everything can empty your stamina. |
| Parry | Time a block as a suitable attack lands. | Take a brief opening and build toward Blazing State. |
| Deflect | Time the deflection input against a suitable attack or projectile. | Damage enemy stamina; some projectiles can be returned to the attacker. |
| Reflex Dodge | Time a dodge for body attacks, including certain punches and kicks that cannot be parried. | Use the opening; later unlocked Reflex abilities can turn it into a stronger response. |
| Issen | Begin your attack just before an enemy blow connects. | Land a powerful counter if the timing succeeds. It is not the name for every successful parry. |
| Break Issen | Completely empty the enemy’s stamina gauge. | Choose among the targets the encounter offers, according to damage, souls or a body part you need to attack. |
Change one thing after a failed attempt
| Problem | Likely issue to inspect | Next attempt |
|---|---|---|
| You get hit while trying to finish a combo | The boss recovered before your attack animation ended. | Use a shorter punish until you know the entire enemy sequence. |
| Blocking drains all your stamina | You are absorbing a full attack string without turning defense into an opening. | Practice a parry or deflection on a recognizable hit; dodge attacks that do not permit those responses. |
| A dodge works on one move but fails on a glowing blade strike | The two moves require different defensive actions. | Read the cue and available prompt; prepare the appropriate parry or deflection instead of repeating the same dodge. |
| You lose health immediately after using a healing item | The boss or a second attacker was still active. | Heal after a completed sequence, with the other enemy in view. |
| A familiar boss suddenly feels different | You may be facing an Enhanced, Altered or paired version. | Check the exact encounter name and look for the added threat. |
| Yoshitsune takes no damage in the last phase | The fight now requires damage during Oni Awakening. | Build and collect souls, transform, then use that window to deal damage. |
Find advice for your current encounter
Use the Bosses directory for all 18 entries and their variants. The routes below organize advice by the decision you need to make during a fight, rather than repeating the entire list of names.
Fight plans by encounter
Choose the exact encounter below. The Nue pair, Greater Nue and enhanced rematches have different demands; check the variant before following a familiar routine.
Sasaki Ganryu: first-duel rhythm
- Watch the angled sword before a thrust. Keep defending until you know whether he chose one heavy thrust or the longer string.
- When he rushes straight at you, track his final position. He can cut immediately or move around your right side before striking.
- Dodge the descending kick and the raised-arm grab. Use a familiar, completed sword sequence for your next counter.
Ifuu: answer the wind setup
- After the gust pushes you back, watch for the wind projectile. Deflect it or move sideways, then regain useful distance.
- When the later whirlwind rush approaches, a timed deflection can create an opening. Finish that defense before attacking.
- If suction pulls you close, expect a jumping slam next. When Ifuu instead rises and releases circling winds, aim the Oni Bow at the inflated organ on his back.
Benkei: create an armor-break opening
Fully Armed is a separate encounter. Expect later moves earlier, and stay alert when a cannon enters the exchange: avoid the thrown weapon, then prepare for the delayed blast.
- Work down stamina with well-timed defenses. At Break Issen, select an armor target to remove protection before relying on ordinary sword damage.
- When his weapon is held for a thrust, prepare for the following slashes as well. Use defense for the luminous follow-ups.
- When his powered-up sequence begins from the left, stay ready for the final downward strike. Counter after the complete string.
Burai: leave room for the lightning follow-up
- When lightning repeatedly strikes ahead, advance through the space a strike has just cleared. Take a short punish after the casting stops.
- Watch the shoulder-held weapon before a rush. Deflect the incoming cut, then use the recovery instead of chasing during the wind-up.
- When Burai disappears, watch the electricity gathering at your feet and time your evasion for the strike.
- A straight lightning attack can lead into an overhead weapon blow. Keep defending until that final cut lands.
Ifuu & Burai: keep the second attacker visible
- Keep both brothers in view while focusing on the one in front. A switch in positions can bring a grab from the new attacker.
- When they overlap with Ifuu leading the rush, prepare a timed defense for the combined approach.
- If they teleport together and raise their weapons, move out before the combined area attack begins.
- When both rise into the air, evade the lightning and keep tracking them. The storm can end with their joint dive; the first clear patch is not a counter window.
Altered Ganryu: check what follows the blade
- If Ganryu stands still with a glowing weapon, stop ordinary sword pressure. His counter stance punishes attacking into that pause.
- When he spins his sword, defend the cut and then the attack from the companion behind him before answering.
- Watch the companion’s mouth during sword exchanges. Its opening can signal a grab inserted between Ganryu’s attacks.
- After defending a rear-limb slash, use the brief pause to strike the limb. Do not rely on the opening remaining available: the limbs can return.
Dokyo: turn the arena mechanics into openings
- Deflect the slow spinning projectile back. In the later phase, stay ready to return it again before moving in.
- When Dokyo floats above the arena with orbiting masks, shoot the masks with the Oni Bow. Approach after the fall, once the surrounding hazards are clear.
- When the enormous orb charges overhead, stop chasing. Get behind the remaining intact rock before the blast; use the recovery afterward to attack.
Yoshitsune: read the opening and the phase transition
- When the sword taps his shoulder, prepare immediately for the fast rushing thrust.
- Dodge the delayed grab before returning to offense. Being caught can give him the souls he needs to become more dangerous.
- At the transition into the armored phase, move away as soon as control returns. Clear the landing point and the ground hazard.
- Defend the airborne arrow sequence, then return to the phase plan below. The later transformation changes how you can damage him.
Byakue and Dohatsu-ten: identify the variant
| Encounter | Start with this plan | Variant change |
|---|---|---|
| Byakue | Deflect the axe; dodge body charges. | Enhanced: move out of Malice pools and watch the empowered ground slam. |
| Dohatsu-ten | Read blade attacks, kicks and ranged slashes separately. Deflect the sword waves. | Enhanced: teleport follow-ups can begin earlier. Face the new position before defending. |
Prepare for the problem that ends the fight
A boss loadout should solve the failure you can see. More damage helps only if you survive long enough to use your openings. Check actual equipment enhancements and charm effects; an appearance change does not add defense.
For Yoshitsune, useful supplies include Heavy Restoratives for healing, Sun-Dried Hozuki for pouch recovery, Stimulants for Awakening support, and defensive talismans for a dangerous stretch. Amulets of Introspection can help with timing-sensitive actions. Equip what you have and check each item’s description; no single inventory list is required to finish the fight.
Keep support for later phases when possible, but use a safe recovery opportunity if the alternative is losing the attempt. A saved item cannot help after you have already died.
- Build by stage: choose equipment and skills you can currently obtain
- Armor and charms: survival and damage choices
- Endgame Boss Setup: a complete later-game loadout
| If you need… | Prepare… | Use it when… |
|---|---|---|
| More room to learn | Clothing enhancements, healing support and a survival-focused charm set. | You are still identifying moves and reaching later phases inconsistently. |
| More value from safe openings | Sword or gauntlet enhancements and skills you can land reliably. | Your defense works but each completed exchange makes little progress. |
| A specific boss interrupt | Comfortable Oni Bow aiming and the relevant target cue. | Rasho-gan presents its special targets or Shuten Doji begins his fire wind-up. |
| A longer final-boss attempt | Hozuki healing plus available restorative, defense and Awakening support items. | You reach the later phases but lack recovery or transformation uptime. |
Late-game fights: recognize the change in the rules
Against Altered Sasaki Ganryu, watch Gioh as well as Ganryu. When she begins restoring him, use the Oni Bow to interrupt the support action. Do not continue attacking through the powered blade sequence just because the earlier duel allowed a longer punish.
Minamoto no Yoshitsune is the final boss. The goal changes across his three phases, so a tactic that worked at the start can stop making progress later.
- Ending and Postgame: place the final fight in the story
- After winning: Continue, New Game Plus or rematches
| Phase | Main job | Read these cues | How to make progress |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 — sword duel | Defend the blade without giving away souls to his grab. | A sword tap against his shoulder precedes a fast forward attack. Watch the delayed reaching hand separately. | Parry or deflect appropriate sword strikes, avoid the grab, then take short openings. |
| 2 — armored and mobile | Work on stamina while keeping recovery and gauges available. | Move away from the opening aerial slam and cracking ground. Prepare for arrow volleys and the faster blade sequence. | Use deflections instead of expecting ordinary hits into intact armor to empty stamina. Collect useful souls at breaks and use Armaments to build toward Awakening. |
| 3 — Awakening damage window | Build Oni Awakening, then deal damage while transformed. | After his soul-gathering pull, be ready for the large follow-up slash; do not keep absorbing through it. | Collect souls when safe, use your gauge-building tools, transform and attack. Finish the transformation with its special attack before its gauge runs out. |

- Carnage preparation and switching restrictions
- Achievement Guide: the full completion route
| Goal | What counts | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Finish the story | Complete the final mission. | Choose Continue for unfinished activities or begin another campaign with New Game Plus. |
| True Onimusha | Finish the campaign on Carnage. | Prepare for its locked difficulty and the equipment reset before starting. |
| Glutton for Punishment | Complete the full Boss Rematch list across its difficulty levels. | Check each entry’s completion marks. Higher-difficulty clears also credit the lower difficulties. |

Frequently asked questions
Where can I find every boss name?
The Bosses page has the full 18-entry Boss Rematch directory, including variants and paired fights. This page focuses on preparation, attack responses and difficult phases.
Is Issen the same as parrying?
No. A parry is a timed block. Issen is an attack started just before the enemy’s blow lands. Break Issen follows fully depleting enemy stamina.
Why do I keep getting hit after a successful defense?
Check whether the enemy sequence actually ended. A second swing, a partner or a flying head may still be attacking. Shorten your punish until you can recognize a complete opening.
Why can I not damage the final boss?
In Yoshitsune’s third phase, he can only be damaged during your Oni Awakening. Build and collect the souls needed for another transformation instead of repeatedly swinging outside that state.
Do I need a perfect consumable loadout?
No. Bring useful healing and support you already have, then learn when it is safe to use them. Preparing for later phases helps, but recovery is worth using when it keeps a viable attempt alive.
Does a Carnage campaign clear finish the rematch trophy?
No. True Onimusha is the Carnage campaign clear; Glutton for Punishment uses the separate Boss Rematch records.
